The width of a line of text in a column or text block, traditionally expressed in picas or Em and now commonly in pixels or characters per line. Measure is one of the most critical variables in Readability: lines that are too short cause excessive hyphenation and choppy reading rhythm; lines that are too long make it difficult for the eye to locate the start of the next line. The widely cited optimal range for continuous body text is roughly 45–75 characters per line (including spaces), with 66 characters often quoted as the ideal.
