A mechanical device that transfers ink from a composed form of type onto paper or another substrate under pressure. Gutenberg's press, adapted from existing screw-press technology used in winemaking, enabled the rapid and consistent reproduction of text at a scale impossible by hand. The printing press catalyzed the standardization of letterforms, the emergence of Typeface design as a profession, and the broad dissemination of written knowledge.
